Designer vs. Decorator

Although the two terms Designer and Decorator may seem like the same thing, they are often mistakenly interchanged.  Many people don’t realize that there’s a difference between the two.   Let’s take a closer look:

A designer has to go through formal education.  They are also required to spend 1-3 years in an apprenticeship with an established design firm upon graduation in order to receive their degree.  In most states they also have to pass exams to get certified through agencies such as the NCIDQ (National Council of Interior Design Certification), as well as keep current on continuing education courses to keep their certification.  Decorators are not required to go through formal education, although most voluntarily take courses to stay informed on the latest trends, fabrics, textiles, and products available on the market.

Another difference is that a Decorator’s main concern is the aesthetics of a space: the color, materials, textiles, space planning, lighting, accessories etc…  Normally they work within  a pre-existing home or business that needs to be re-decorated and/or updated.  Designers are decorators (and do everything they do), but also take into account the psychological side of a space.  They consider the relationship between the space and users.  How does the architecture, color, texture, design relate to the client as well as other spaces?  They can also work alongside architects to create new building plans as well as renovations of existing structures.

Both Designers and Decorators are professional and should be equally seen as such.
